Poems and Songs of Vladimir Vysotsky. There Was Once a Man.

Commentary to “A Robber Song”.

In the poems and songs presented in this section, it is said about the awaited messenger, who was promised by the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.

In the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, it is written about him in verses 13 ‒ 15 of chapter 52, and in verses 1 ‒ 12 of chapter 53 (verses 13 and 15 of chapter 52, and verses 1 and 4 ‒ 12 of chapter 53 also relate to Jesus Christ, peace be upon him).

This song calls to mind Gablulla Tukay’s poem “The Hard Lot” (1911).

The song was written for the film “How Czar Peter Married Off His Moor” (1976).

The presented text is adapted from Stas and Margaret Porokhnya and Sergey Roy’s translations.
